日本航空は成田―韓国・釜山線を7月から運休します。格安航空会社（LCC）との競争が激しく、新型コロナウイルスの収束後も高収益を上げるのは難しいと判断したためです。成田―ソウル線も3年前から運休しており、これによって1978年5月の空港開港以降、日航が運航を続けてきた成田発着の韓国路線は無くなります。釜山線は79年7月に就航し、需要の拡大に対応するため、当初の週3往復から週14往復に運航便数を増やしていました。成田乗り継ぎで北米路線を利用する外国人旅客が多く、感染拡大前の航空券販売の比率は国内約40％、海外約60％でした。釜山線には大韓航空，韓国のLCCのチェジュ航空やエアプサンも運航し、競争が激化。この点を考慮して、日航は7日、21～25年度の中期経営計画を発表し、新型コロナの影響で業績が悪化する中、低収益路線の運休など事業規模の適正化を打ち出しました。成田―釜山線，台湾・高雄線の運休を決定し、両都市の事務所を閉鎖します。運休の期間は区切っていません。日航は「事業構造を見直して機材数を縮小することに伴い、当面運休する方針です。LCCがシェアを伸ばし収益性に課題があり、新型コロナの収束後もLCCが拡大し、厳しい競争環境が見込まれる」と判断しました。赤坂祐二社長は7日の記者会見で「中期計画中の回復は難しい。いずれ環境が整えば、何とか回復できればと思う」と述べました。日航は18年3月、開港以来続けてきた成田―ソウル線を運休、羽田―ソウル線に集約しており、釜山線の運休で成田発着の韓国路線は無くなります。日航は「40年以上の歴史を持ち、日本と韓国を往来する方々にとっての懸け橋としてフライトを積み重ねてきた。多くの関係者に支えて頂いているがゆえに、成田発着の韓国線が運休となるのは心苦しい」と説明しています。

[ No longer be any South Korean route to and from Narita Intl' Airport - fierce competition with low-cost carriers (LCC) ]

Japan Airlines will suspend its Narita - Busan, South Korea route from July. This is because of the fierce competition with low-cost carriers (LCCs), and the airline has determined that it will be difficult to generate high profits even after the new coronavirus is under control. The Narita-Seoul route has also been suspended for the past three years, and this will eliminate the Korean routes to and from Narita that JAL has been operating since the airport opened in May 1978. The Pusan route was launched in July 1979, and the number of flights had been increased from the initial 3 round trips per week to 14 round trips per week in order to meet the growing demand. Many foreign passengers use the North American route to connect to Narita, and the ratio of ticket sales before the spread of the infection was approximately 40% for domestic and 60% for overseas flights.

Taking this into consideration, Japan Airlines announced its medium-term management plan for the fiscal years 2009 to 2013 on April 7, 2009, and amidst the deteriorating business performance due to the new Corona, the airline has put forth a plan to optimize the scale of its business by suspending operations on low-profit routes. We have decided to suspend operations on the Narita-Pusan route and the Kaohsiung route in Taiwan, and will close our offices in both cities. The period of suspension has not been set. JAL has decided to suspend operations for the time being as it is reviewing its business structure and reducing the number of aircraft. At a press conference on the 7th, President Yuji Akasaka said, "It will be difficult to recover during the mid-term plan. I hope that we can manage to recover when the environment becomes more favorable.
In March 2006, JAL suspended its Narita-Seoul route, which had been in operation since the opening of the port, and consolidated it into the Haneda-Seoul route. With the suspension of the Busan route, there will no longer be any South Korean routes to or from Narita. Japan Airlines said, "With a history of more than 40 years, we have accumulated flights as a bridge for people traveling between Japan and Korea. It is with deep regret that we have to suspend our flights to and from Narita, as we have been supported by many people.
