International Air Transport Association (IATA): summer travel demand down 66%, systematic testing required for recovery of international flights
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revised its estimations for the number of travelers in 2020, projecting a year-on-year decrease of 66% rather than the previously announced 63%, following even lower demand for travel than expected this past summer. Demand for international flights in August was a bit higher than in July, which was down 98.1%; however it was still a huge decline, down 88.3 percent from the previous year. On the other hand, domestic flights were down 50.9%--a slight recovery from the 56.9% decrease seen in July. IATA's director general Alexandre de Juniac warned that in normal years airline companies use profits earned in the summer busy season to ride out the lower demand in autumn and winter, but this year they are entering the off-season in the worst financial conditions in history. He went on to say that while airlines have again requested financial support and wage subsidies from national governments, they are aware that quarantine measures are an obstacle to recovery for international flights, and as some airlines have started testing passengers on a trial basis, it is important that governments also cooperate to establish systematic testing procedures for air travel.
